Visas are required for travel to Burundi and must be obtained in advance of travel. However, citizens of East African Community member states (Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda) can obtain their visa upon arrival, free of charge, from any official point of entry.
In general, a visa application must include the following documents:
Further advice on visas can be obtained from the closest Burundian embassy, consulate or immigration office (see list below). Please note that visa applications can be sent by post.
A visa may be processed within 2 working days, but we advice all travelers to submit their applications at least 3 weeks before departure. The maximum duration of a visit visa is three months after which it can renewed at the P.A.F.E. (Police de l’Air, des Frontières, et des Etrangers). Please be advised that travelers with an expired visa are not permitted to leave the country without acquiring an exit visa prior to departure.
Once in Burundi, it is advised that all foreigners carry photocopies of their passports and visas at all times due to multiple police security checkpoints in Bujumbura. |
